About the Breg Cold Compression Pad — Back

The Breg back pad is a broad rectangular pad held against the lumbar spine by a strap around the waist. Unlike the joint pads it is not contoured, because the area being treated is flat and wide rather than wrapped around a joint — what matters here is even coverage across the lower back and enough surface area to reach the muscles either side of the spine. Chilled water circulates through it from the Polar Care Wave while an air bladder applies intermittent compression. It fits a waist from 83 cm to 135 cm and measures 34 × 37 cm laid flat. It is used after lumbar surgery, including discectomy and fusion, and by people managing acute lower back pain where a clinician has recommended cold therapy.

How it works

The pad wraps the treated area and connects to the Polar Care Wave by a single hose. Chilled water from the unit circulates through channels in the pad while an air bladder inflates and deflates against the skin, so cold and intermittent compression are applied together rather than one after the other. The pad shape is contoured to the joint it is made for, which keeps the cold in contact with the tissue that needs it.

Key features

  • Cold and intermittent compression applied together, not in sequence
  • Contoured for the back rather than a flat pack held in place
  • Connects to the Polar Care Wave with a single hose
  • Fits without needing to be re-positioned every few minutes
  • Wipe-clean and reusable

Commonly used for

  • Recovery after lumbar discectomy or spinal fusion
  • Managing an acute lower back episode
  • After a back injury where cold has been recommended
  • Post-training recovery for heavy lifting athletes
  • Reducing swelling around a surgical site on the spine
