About the Breg Cold Compression Pad — Knee

The Breg knee pad is the cold compression pad most often used after knee surgery, and the one supplied with the Polar Care Wave in its knee configuration. It is contoured rather than flat, so it sits around the kneecap and along the joint line instead of bridging awkwardly across the front of the knee, which is what keeps the cold in contact with the tissue that has actually been operated on. A single hose connects it to the unit, carrying chilled water through the pad while an air bladder applies intermittent compression against the same area. It fits a knee circumference between 20 cm and 81 cm, which covers the large majority of adults, and measures 53 × 33 cm laid flat. People commonly buy a second pad so one can be in use while the other dries, and clinics keep spares for the same reason.

How it works

The pad wraps the treated area and connects to the Polar Care Wave by a single hose. Chilled water from the unit circulates through channels in the pad while an air bladder inflates and deflates against the skin, so cold and intermittent compression are applied together rather than one after the other. The pad shape is contoured to the joint it is made for, which keeps the cold in contact with the tissue that needs it.
